“My goal on the first Free Country CD was to locate the confluence of Miles Davis and Johnny Cash. It allowed me to combine simple, timeless Appalachian and country melodies with elaborate, modern improvisation and arranging, to combine stark vocal tunes with instrumental escapades.This recording continues in that vein, traveling along the seams of many styles of American music. Unlike the first, however, I have included original songs here, and have stepped out of the shadows as primary vocalist. This is a more personal, intimate statement, a close-up instead of a long view.”
